Chapter 19: Navigation with Nav2

This chapter covers navigation using Nav2, explaining its architecture, path planning algorithms (A*, Dijkstra, RRT), bipedal humanoid path planning, obstacle detection and dynamic replanning, behavior trees for navigation control, and addressing real-world navigation challenges.

Understanding Nav2 for Robot Navigation

Nav2 is the navigation stack for ROS 2, providing a modular and configurable framework for autonomous robot navigation. It is built around a behavior tree-based executive that orchestrates various navigation functionalities.

Path Planning Algorithms

Nav2 utilizes various path planning algorithms to generate efficient and collision-free paths for robots. This includes:

  • A* (A-star): A widely used graph traversal and path search algorithm that finds the shortest path between a starting and a goal node.
  • Dijkstra's Algorithm: Another classic algorithm for finding the shortest paths between nodes in a graph.
  • RRT (Rapidly-exploring Random Tree): An algorithm designed for efficiently searching non-convex, high-dimensional spaces by constructing a space-filling tree.

Bipedal Humanoid Path Planning

A significant feature of Nav2 is its adaptability to different robot types, including bipedal humanoids. This involves specialized considerations for stability, balance, and gait planning during navigation.

Obstacle Detection and Dynamic Replanning

Nav2 incorporates robust obstacle detection mechanisms, using sensor data to identify static and dynamic obstacles. It can perform dynamic replanning, adjusting the robot's path in real-time to avoid unexpected obstacles.

Behavior Trees for Navigation Control

Behavior trees provide a powerful and flexible way to design and manage complex navigation behaviors. Nav2 leverages behavior trees to define the robot's high-level navigation logic, allowing for sophisticated decision-making and error recovery.

Addressing Real-World Navigation Challenges

This section will explore common challenges encountered in real-world robot navigation, such as navigating in dynamic environments, dealing with sensor noise, localization errors, and strategies to overcome these issues using Nav2.
